Citadel Parc

The first park in Sibiu. The Promenade was arranged for the first time in 1791 instead of the moats and lakes outside the southern wall of the city. Later it was called "The Disabled Promenade." The current arrangement of the park, including the space between the walls, dates from 1928.

The walls of the Coposu Boulevard

Along the Boulevard Coposu 3rd ring of fortifications can be seen in all its brilliance.
Between the roadway and the wall there is a green area with trees arranged for the first time in 1791 in Haller Bastion and Great Tower, later extended to Cisnadie Bastion, and is known as the promenade. At the end of the Union Square the wall is pierced with a semicircular arch to allow the passage of pedestrians, as well as near the Great Tower.
In this segment of the wall, in the middle of it, there is a monument erected in 1828 during his visit in Sibiu of Emperor Francis I.

The Great Tower was built in the XVIth century. The first theater in Sibiu worked in 1778 in the tower. Recently, it has been renovated and incorporated in the Thalia Hall.

In front of the monument there is stele decorated with top military lenticular. A marble plaque specifies it was rigged up also in 1828 in honor of Johannes Vecsey. Between the monument and the stele in 1981 the architect Dan Fraticiu has built up a fountain.

At the intersection of Philharmonic Street and Boulevard Coposu, the wall was broken to allow the passage of cars. Here was the former Gate corpses, opened in the wall in 1554 during the plague epidemic.

The wall of the Fortress Street (1357 - 1366)

The segment of the fortification walls between the Carpenters’ tower and Potters’ tower escaped the "systematization" in XIXth century.
Nowadays, the wall has the appearance from the second half of the fifteenth century when it was rebuilt in brick and fitted inwards with wide arches supporting road watch. It has a wooden fence and a water roof supported by wooden pillars.
In front of the access to the Carpenters' Tower, inside, appears a kind of balcony, the tower being placed outside the wall, with a flanking role. Wall’s shooting places are adjusted to the arquebuses, the initial ones, the ramaparts for the archery being extended but also reduced in height.

The Thick Tower (Thalia Hall) - 1540

Intre str. Cetatii nr. 5 si Bulevardul Spitalelor
1540

cazare sibiu casa salzburg archebuzierilor

It was rebuilt on an octagonal foundation. It later became the Weavers' Tower, named after the guild which administrated it.

It is the southernmost of the three towers.

The tower has the shape of an octagonal prism with the superior part standing out from the main body, supported by consoles with arches in which holes for launching are placed.
The firing holes at the first level have the shape of a key hole. Up to the height of 1 meter the tower is built in stone and the superior part is made of bricks.

The Carpenters' Tower 1337 – 1366
